Identifying Fluids by Color and Consistency

- Light Brown to Black (Engine Oil): Engine oil is slick to the touch and can appear amber to dark brown or even black as it ages. These leaks, which are usually found directly under the engine, are typically caused by faulty gaskets, compromised seals, damaged valve covers, or a punctured or corroded oil pan. Ignoring an oil leak can cause the engine to run with insufficient lubrication, which can potentially lead to overheating, excessive wear, and engine failure.
- Red or Brown (Transmission Fluid): Transmission fluid is usually easy to identify by its red dye, but it can darken with age and become more of a brown color that looks very similar to engine oil. One way to distinguish it is by smell—transmission fluid will have an odor that smells like gasoline. You may spot leaks coming from the transmission itself, or they could be coming from the lines connected to the radiator or transmission cooler. Since the transmission is vital to how your car performs (and is an expensive component to replace), it’s important to avoid driving your vehicle until you can schedule an inspection and repairs.
- Clear, Red, or Brown (Power Steering Fluid): Power steering fluid can be clear, red, or turn brownish as it ages and can be confused with transmission fluid—however, unlike transmission fluid, it won’t smell like gas. The consistency will be slick like engine oil, but slightly thinner. Power steering fluid leaks are often found near the front, left side of the vehicle. If you think you have a power steering leak, it’s important to schedule an appointment ASAP, as fluid leaks can lead to a loss of power steering and difficulty handling your vehicle safely.
- Transparent Yellow to Brown (Brake Fluid): New brake fluid is transparent yellow and turns brown over time. It has a slick texture and can be found anywhere under your vehicle. Since brake fluid is vital for safe driving, any sign of a leak warrants immediate attention.
- Green, Orange, Pink, or Blue-Green (Coolant): Coolant, also known as antifreeze, comes in bright green, orange, or blue-green colors. It also has a sweet smell and watery consistency that makes it easy to identify. Coolant leaks can easily lead to engine overheating and damage, so it’s important to schedule repairs as soon as possible.
- Clear (Water): If you have a puddle of clear water under your vehicle, it’s probably nothing to worry about; it’s typically caused by condensation from the air conditioner.
